What's Fadoodle?

Visual and tactile learners need a more engaging platform than pencil and paper.  Fadoodles helps students build words before their eyes in an interactive learning environment for spelling and reading fun! Combining technological successes with low-cost hardware, Fadoodles bridges the divide between physical spelling games and encompassing software programs. Starting with wood carved, magnetic letter blocks, Fadoodles is a spelling game like no other. On the back of each block is an engraved feducial, or QR code, that a camera can pick up. With this code, the camera can sense how the student is playing and what words they are putting together. To prompt further expansion of grammer, object recognition, and reading, the software is built around this recognition to serve as a psudo teacher that can mentor the student along their growth in the english language.

How could I make one?

To build a fadoodle environment you would need the following items:

  • Computer
  • Video Camera (any size works)
  • Magnets (1/8" radius)
  • Acrylic Glue
  • Glue Gun
    • Best for quick gluing wood
  • Acrylic Paint
    • one bottle of white paint
  • 1 piece black acrylic (1/8")
    • 18 x 24
    • Blocked Letters: the black adds a good contrast to white paint
  • 2 pieces of clear acrylic (1/4")
    • 18 x 24
    • Table top: this is a very inexpensive way to make a see through table
    • Blocked letters: this can help protect the wood
  • 2 pieces of Wood (1/4")
    • 18 x 24
    • Blocked letters: the center of each fadoodle block is a wood cut piece that provides stability
    • Table: if you do not own a glass table, you can make one easily with a laser cutter

Where should I start?
Beginning, please check out the Corel Drawing files that I attached below to help guide you along. For more details on how to build both the letter blocks and the table top, visit my previous blog posts on Fadoodles!

Good Luck,
