Dizzying Name

Our first assignment for the lab class BBA Fall 2012 was to design an artsy name tag, taking an artist that we love/admire/disgust/etc. as an inspiration. But which artist to pick?! The artist that popped up in my mind was Jean Tinguely, a sculptor who - in my opinion - creates some of the most exciting machines as they are close to what you as a kid might have designed. And he happens to be Swiss, like I am too. So, why not…

GoGo Board project: gesture-based Lunar Lander

For this project, we wanted to use sensors to develop alternative ways to interact with the game "Lunar Lander".

The first step was to have the GoGo Board communicate with NetLogo; by chance, an extension has been developed for this exact purpose: the GoGo extension. The plugin is fairly easy to use (you don't even have to install it, since it's part of the original NetLogo installation).…

Name Tag: Monet's Water Lilies

Initially I couldn't decide which artist to choose. I almost went with Matisse because his fern cutouts are interesting and would work well with the laser cutter, but I kept coming back to Monet.  I love Impressionist art and the water lily paintings always make me feel peaceful.

Because the Japanese bridge features prominently in Monet's paintings, I decided…

ProxiLamp - "Magic" Lamp

For my final project in “Beyond Bits and Atoms” I decided to make a lamp. Not a regular lamp, but a multi-colored lamp that is controlled by your hands without actually having to touch the lamp. It is proximity based, hence the name ProxiLamp. I think this is a great concept since it forces you to interact with the lamp as you create colors. It’s in some sense similar to a candle, there is no switch or remote so you have to physically work with it to either light it up or blow it out. The…

SpellBoard

The SpellBoard (TM) is designed to provide learners both a context to recognize and remember word (the image) as well as visual feedback on whether the learner has spelled the word correctly correctly (LED lights that give green/red for correct/incorrect placement).

I began by drawing a picture of what I envisioned the product to look like.   Here is what that…

ResisTeacher: A Tangible Interface and Device for Teaching the Resistor Color Code

ResisTeacher Design and Evolution

Ryan Andrade

One thing I have come to learn from being around electronics students is that far too many take the time to learn the standard 5% resistor color code. For as common as resistors are and as much as we use them to design everything from simple blinking LED…
